CVT is only used for passenger cars, not suitable for heavy duty vehicles due to its torque limit. It seems only Japanese are still keen on CVT. European and American OEMs are more in favor of DCT. The conventional automatic transmission uses hydraulic torque converter, so the operation is very smooth but the effeciency is lower compared with CVT and AMT because of the torque loss due to the fluid viscosity. The advantage of AMT is high effeciency, but the shift smoothness and NVH is less satisfactory than CVT and conventional torque converter.
