For the first time in franchise history, the Timberwolves had three representatives at the 2004 NBA All-Star Game, held Feb. 15 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Forward Kevin Garnett, the 2003 All-Star Game MVP, was voted a starter for the Western Conference, making his seventh All-Star appearance and his sixth start. Garnett finished first in the West and third overall in the league in fan voting with 1,780,918 votes.
Head coach Flip Saunders earned the right to coach the West squad after the Wolves defeated Denver on Jan. 26. (Sacramento's 37-13 record at the All-Star break was better than Minnesota's 37-15 record, but Kings coach Rick Adelman was ineligible because he had led the 2003 West All-Stars.)
Guard Sam Cassell was selected one of seven Western Conference reserves by the West coaches. He made his first career All-Star appearance at age 34, becoming the second-oldest first-time All-Star in NBA history.
The West won 136-132 win over the East. Garnett, who scored the first points of the game, recorded 12 points with seven rebounds and six assists. Cassell added four points and a team-high seven assists.
