Game Story
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Kendall Gill tied an NBA
record with 11 steals and recorded his first triple-double in
more than three years as the New Jersey Nets posted an 88-77
victory over the slumping Miami Heat.
Gill tied the league mark set by Larry Kenon of the San Antonio
Spurs on December 26, 1976. He added 15 points and 10 rebounds
for his first triple-double since December 12, 1995 as a member
of the Charlotte Hornets.
"I knew I put in a big defensive effort, but I didn't know about
the record," Gill said. "This just shows the commitment we've
made to defense."
Keith Van Horn had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Stephon Marbury
added 21 for New Jersey, which has won consecutive games for the
first time this season and improved to 4-7 under interim coach
Don Casey. Van Horn was just 6-of-24 from the field, but
15-of-15 from the free-throw line.
Playing without injured center Jayson Williams, the Nets
overcame a 24-16 first-quarter deficit by holding Miami to just
14 points in the second and third quarters. Williams is
expected to be out for the season after fracturing his right leg
in the final minute of Thursday's 90-85 victory over the Atlanta
Hawks.
"When you lose a player like Jayson Williams, who's essentially
the heart and soul of this team, to come out and get a win
against one of the best teams in the NBA, it's obviously a great
feeling of satisfaction," Van Horn said.
New Jersey matched its biggest lead at 76-63 on two free throws
by Van Horn before the Heat tried to rally in the final minutes.
Alonzo Mourning had 23 points, 17 rebounds and matched a
career-high with nine blocks for Miami, but fouled out with 2:53
remaining, thwarting the Heat's comeback.
"We could not shoot the ball today," Miami coach Pat Riley said.
"We missed the first seven shots in the second quarter and the
first six in the third. I think there was one guy who really
played and that is Zo."
The Heat have lost four in a row for the first time since April
2-8, 1996 and fell 2 1/2 games behind first-place Orlando in the
Atlantic Division.
"It feels like I'm in a bad dream and I can't wake up," Mourning
said. "I sound like a broken record, loss after loss after loss.
I don't know what is happening. I don't know what went wrong.
It feels likes my head is spinning."
Terry Porter, who added 17 points for Miami, hit three
3-pointers in the final four minutes. His second pulled the Heat
within 80-74 with 72 seconds remaining. But Chris Carr answered
with a basket and Marbury added two free throws to give the Nets
an 84-74 advantage with 35 seconds left.
"We thought about Jay, but Jay is gone and we still have to win
games," Gill said. "We only have 19 games left and we want to
finish up strong."
Although still saddled with the worst record in the Eastern
Conference, the Nets have improved defensively under Casey,
holding five of their last eight opponents under 90 points.
New Jersey tied a season high with 16 steals and established a
season low with just eight turnovers. The Nets also held Miami
to just 36.5 percent shooting (27-of-74) and forced 20
turnovers.
"I thought our game management was good," Casey said. "To hold
them to 36 percent shooting and get 16 steals demonstrates a
commitment to the defensive end, especially Kendall Gill. It
seemed like he was everywhere."
New Jersey ripped off a 12-0 run at the start of the second
period to go up 28-24 on a pair of foul shots by Jamie Feick
with 6:51 to play in the half. The Nets increased their lead to
39-29 on Van Horn's foul shot with 3:22 left before settling for
a 44-38 halftime advantage.
"They are not trying to prove they can play without Jayson
Williams," Miami guard Tim Hardaway said. "They were just out
there playing hard."
Gill's 3-pointer with 22 seconds to play in the third quarter
gave New Jersey a 61-52 cushion entering the final period.
New Jersey posted its first win in three meetings with the Heat
this season. Miami ripped the Nets 102-76 in the previous game
on March 14, leading to the firing of former New Jersey coach
John Calipari.
The Nets shot just 34 percent (28-of-82) from the field but made
29-of-36 from the line.
