After winning the 2001 All-Star Game MVP
"It's special, and it's a tribute to my coach and my teammates - especially
my teammates - because without them I would not be here."
After almost getting his first career triple double
"I really wanted it because I never did it before."
After his first All Star Game
"I was sitting up all night, I couldn't go to sleep. I've never been as
nervous in a game before in my life. My first game in the NBA, I know I
wasn't this nervous."
About scoring 50 in his rookie season
"I played that game like it was my last."
After his first playoff game
"I am still excited about this game, I feel like I could still play another
48 minutes. The crowd was against us and it was just great playing in that
kind of atmosphere. This was my first one, and I would love to play in a lot
more."
On growing up too fast
"Oh man...I think I've been grown up. Man, I was 18 years old in jail. I was
17 years old and a minor and having to worry about newspapers writing different
negative things about me, all on the front page, my name-my full name-and I'm
a minor. I had to deal with that, I had to deal with goin' to jail, and
comin' out, and going to school and havin' to graduate over a summer. And then
go right to college and handle all that. I mean, I grew up fast."
On the way he dresses and being "too black" for the NBA
"We all dress hip-hop. Like Steph. We dress hip-hop, we love hip-hop; I mean,
that's just our generation right now. We love bein' flashy, have flashy
jewelry-my friends got jewelry, you know, they wear baggy pants, [have] nice
cars. I mean, that's everything you strive for in life, for me.It's all I
wanted to be able to do, to be able to take care of my mom and my little
sisters and my family."
On growing up in a bad area and spending time in jail
"It's all about always believing, I've seen the bad side of life and I
survived. Now, I plan to enjoy the good side. And I don't plan to look back.
My past has taught me a lot, and I'm not ashamed of it, it taught me how
quickly things can be taken away from you. It taught me how important it is
to believe in yourself even if others turn their back on you. It wasn't easy
waking up in a cell. But it would've been easier to quit. I didn't do that.
I fought through the hard times."
After scoring 46 p in San Antonio but still losing
"It would have been better to have a one-point performance and win than
having a 40-point game and lose."
About his mothers role in his life
"She's my best friend. She means everything to my life and my career.
Everything."
About somebody being the next Jordan
"He's done so much for this game and meant so much to this game that I don't
think anyone would be able to do it like he did it. He had five MVPs and six
championships. So it'd be hard for anybody to try to put their foot in his
shoes. Especially one person. I think it's going take a collective effort of
10 to 15 guys trying to fill his shoes and they still probably wouldn't fit."
If somebody can stop him 1-on-1
"No, I don’t think so. And I really believe this in my heart. I don’t think
nobody in the league can stop me—and I know that there’s a lot of guys in
the league that feel the same way I feel, so I don’t think that’s no
big-headed or conceited comment. I don’t really think nobody can stop me.
Maybe in college, when they ran box-and-ones on me, but in the NBA, where
it’s just man to man? No one can stop me. A team may be able to do something
with me, but no one man can stop me from doing whatever I want to do on the
basketball court."
About WNBA
"I think the women's game is becoming very popular. In fact, I hope my
daughter will have the desire to play for the WNBA one day."
Larry Brown on Iverson
I mean, this is a different animal. This is a kid who's just so different
from any other that's ever been put on this planet.
Eric Snow on Iverson
He's a good kid. Give him a chance. To whom it may concern, give him a chance.
Gary Payton on Iverson
There’s no way that anyone can stop him from, basically, scoring.
Mark Jackson on Iverson
You match up with him out on the wing, and with that dribble he’s just a
nightmare to guard. He’s an unbelievable talent, and worst of all, if you
have to play against him, I think he’s only getting better.
Stephon Marbury on Iverson
He takes a beating, I mean, six years from now, I hope he ain’t doing that,
or he’s going to be hurting hard, man. I know, because I’m probably one of
the biggest, strongest guards in the League. I go like 195 and I get bruises.
So I know he takes a beating.
Reggie Miller on Iverson
He’s almost like a young Michael Jordan.
