Position available for a PhD thesis in the field of nanostructured materials

Description
The Institute of Physics of the Complex Matter (IPMC) at EPFL-Lausanne has an open position for a PhD in the field of thin film physics and technology, in particular, development and optimisation of nanocomposite thin films and epitaxially grown nanolayers for a variety of nanotechnology applications. The research oriented to structural characterisation and investigation of functional properties, will entail an experimental as well as an analytical part of modelling and simulation. The PhD student will be involved in the fabrication of nanocomposite thin films, structural characterisation by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic techniques and nanoindentation. The experimental results will be described in terms of microscopic defects in metastable systems and phenomena active at nanoscale. The project benefits from collaboration with other academic and industrial partners.

Required qualifications (Education)
Master degree in solid-state physics or materials science (or equivalent). Strong background in structure-property relations in nanostructured materials. Computer skills and fluent knowledge in English is required. The candidate should display a high level of motivation and ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
