【会议介绍】
A World Filtration Congress is convened once every three to four years, and
in 2004 this special event will be held in conjunction with the AFS Annual T
echnical Conference and Exposition. AFS was awarded this privilege by a majo
rity vote of the INDEFI (International Delegates on Filtration) Council base
d on its WFC9 proposal.
The just-completed 8th World Filtration Congress (WFC8) drew over 1000 deleg
ates from 42 countries to Brighton, UK to discuss the latest developments in
filtration and separation. At the closing ceremony of the Congress, held on
April 7 in The Brighton Center, Brighton, UK, it was announced AFS will hos
t the next congress - WFC9. Dr. Albert Rushton, past chairman of INDEFI and
WFC8, then handed over the official records book, which keeps all the histor
ical records of past congresses, to Dr. Wallace Leung. This symbolizes that
the United States will take over the chairmanship of INDEFI for the next fou
r years and will have the responsibility for organizing WFC9.
According to Dr. Leung, the organizing committee of WFC9 is expecting to dou
ble the size of typical AFS annual conferences with 300 technical papers inc
luding oral and poster presentations, invited papers and plenary lectures. T
here will be a series of pre-Congress short courses to be held on Monday of
that week (April 19-23, 2004), and post-Congress plant tours (afternoon of F
riday, April 23, 2004). In addition, an exposition with 130-150 exhibitor bo
oths displaying the latest filtration and separation technologies will be in
cluded.
The WFC9 organization committees have been established. Wallace Leung, will
assume the position of Chairman overseeing the Congress functions and organi
zation. He will also be the Chairman of INDEFI for the next four years. Char
lotte Stripling will be the Congress Secretariat as well as the Secretary of
INDEFI. Ken Rubow will be the Operations Chairman of WFC9 working closely w
ith the Operations Committee consisting of Ray Collins, Wu Chen, Sandra Iver
son, Bernie Scheiner, Norris Whiteside, and Kyung-Ju Choi. George Chase and
Ernest Mayer will be the Technical Co-Chairmen working with the Scientific C
ommittee, consisting of a group of distinguished international guests from 4
0-50 countries to define the technical program. Les White will be the Congre
ss Financial Controller, and Ed Gregor the Congress Exposition Chairman with
Rhonda Stricklin, serving as Exposition General Secretary assisting Ed Greg
or on all Exposition matters. And Frank Tiller, one of the several forefathe
rs in promo ting filtration activities and world congresses, will be the adv
isor of WFC9.
Information about the 9th World Filtration Congress is available on the AFS
web page www.afssociety.org and will be updated as news develops. WFC9 will
provide an excellent opportunity for AFS members and their peers in the aren
a of filtration and separation to join hands together and participate in thi
s international project. As AFS brings this internationally visible filtrati
on and separation event to New Orleans, they look forward to having all thos
e interested in this field participate in WFC9.
About INDEFI
The first World Filtration Congress, held in 1974, was informally coordinate
d by a number of individual organizations, each acting independently. In 199
0, INDEFI (International Delegates on Filtration) was created as an umbrella
body to coordinate and widen the competition for the right to organize futu
re Congresses. Proposals are accepted only from registered Members of INDEFI
and must provide evidence that the organizing team "has the experience and
resources to stage a major world conference." Membership in INDEFI is open t
o Filtration Societies that have the science and technology of filtration an
d separation as their principal activity. Only one member is permitted per c
ountry. At present there are seven Member filtration societies. Societies wh
o are interested in applying for membership in INDEFI should indicate their
principle activities in filtration and separation as well as their society m
embership and contact Wallace Leung, Chairman of INDEFI, c/o AFS Society, ww
