2 Postdoctoral and 2 PhD positions in microfabricated Lab-on-a-Chip (Bio-MEMS) for biotechnological applications
MIC www.mic.dtu.dk is a research center for advanced micro- and nanotechnology
at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) www.dtu.dk. The Cell Particle Handling Group at MIC works on integration of micromachined tools for the manipulation, sorting and analyses of cells. The work involves development of a platform for DNA amplification based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR chip), sample preparation for PCR based on dielectrophoresis (DEP), micro arrays for DNA analysis, and optical cell analysis systems (flow cytometers). We are implementing such systems for detecting pathogens in clinical samples and food (e.g. Campylobacter in chickens), mutations screening, and for cancers detection (e.g. colon cancer)
Two Postdoctoral and two PhD positions are available in the Cell Particle Handling Group at MIC. The positions are involved in EU and national research projects
Candidates with a master degrees (for PhD positions) or a PhD degree (for postdoc positions) in physics, chemistry or molecular biology are invited to apply for three years Ph D positions or two years post-doc positions starting October 2005 (or soon thereafter) to work with the development of Lab on chip for
1) Rapid detection or mass screening of colon cancer
2) Rapid detection of mutation in tumour development
3) Rapid detecting bacterial pathogen in food and clinical samples.
All of the projects will focus on the development of integrated Lab-on-a-Chip systems for sample preparation, DNA amplification by PCR and detection of the PCR products.
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to.
· Experience with design and fabrication of microsystems
· Clean room experience
· Experience with optical detection methods
· Experience with PCR, DNA arrays and molecular biology methods for mutation detection
The salary and conditions of employment are according to the current rules for Postdoctoral and PhD degree students. Further information is available at www.mic.dtu.dk or by contacting Anders Wolff, aw@mic.dtu.dk, phone +45 45256305 fax: +45 45887762.
To apply please send a CV with list of publications, copy of certificate with grades, thesis and letters of recommendation no later than September 15th to

MIC represents a cross-disciplinary research environment where micro and nanotechnology are applied to a wide range of scientific disciplines, e.g. mechanics, optics, chemistry, medical technologies, and biotechnology. MIC has access to a state-of-the-art cleanroom, chemical laboratories, biochemical laboratories, and optical laboratories. MIC’s vision is to ensure the establishment of a micro and nanotechnology industry in Denmark. MIC’s mission therefore comprises three distinct activities: Scientific research in micro and nanotechnology, education of scientists and engineers in micro and nanotechnology and transfer of scientific knowledge to private industry. MIC employs 80 scientists and engineers among which 40 Ph.D. students. The vast majority of our scientific projects are conducted in collaboration with Danish industry. MIC offers a comprehensive course plan with theoretical and experimental courses that allows students with various scientific backgrounds to learn about the different facets of micro and nanotechnology. In the past decade MIC has generated 10 start-up and spin-off companies. Several of these companies are expected to launch their first micro and nanotechnology-based products in 2005.
