Determining the Main Idea

When you look for the main idea of a selection, you look for the most important
idea. The examples, reasons, or details that further explain the main idea are
called supporting details.
Some main ideas are clearly stated within a passage—often in the first sentence ofa paragraph, or sometimes in the last sentence of a passage. Other times, an author doesn’t directly state the main idea
