我理解并没有那么严格的规定
现代英语这个组合挺常见的（可能老语法书会强调这个）

但是用与不用，逻辑关系上，有微妙的nuance

if the indicator light is red, the door is locked.
表示这两件事情有关联，但没有明确因果关系
也可能因为门关了，所以灯变红了

if the indicator light is red, then the door is locked.
这里if从句是then从句的起因，强调因为灯变红了，所以门关了

生活用语，只是作为条件从句，并没有那么重视逻辑关系的话
不用then就可以了，但不能说用then就是错误的
