HTC Research Center Internship Opportunities
Professor Edward Chang, HTC Vice President
The HTC Beijing research center will seek to accelerate the pace of scientific research and development in innovating new computing systems and algorithms for creating new data-intensive end-user experiences.
By creating and funding a center to collaborate with leading institutions in computer science and related areas, HTC aims to explore new computational solutions for how people share, store and manipulate large amounts of data. This will enable the extraction of the right information to gain new insights to improve application performance and user experience.
Objectives of HTC Research Center
HTC Beijing research center will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with the massive, unstructured and dynamic nature of Big Data. These Big Data demand parallel and online computing methods to ensure quick processing so as to support timely business decisions and user recommendations. Furthermore, it has been well recognized that a data-driven approach, which uses Big Data for training algorithms, can substantially improve the effectiveness of target applications.
We expect the center to develop cutting edge Big Data analysis algorithms, which can deal with large volume of diversified types of data and which can apply to improve user experience of applications in areas of multimedia, speech, sensor processing and fusion, and personalization.
Leadership
The center reports directly to HTC Software VP, Professor Edward Chang. Professor Chang was the Director of Google Research at China from 2006 to 2012. Before that, he was a full professor at University of California, Santa Barbara. Besides his position at HTC, he is also appointed as an adjunct professor at HKUST, Hong Kong. The center is expected to recruit leading researchers to mentor interns and is expected to publish actively.
Call for Interns
HTC invites candidates with strong background in Algorithms, Machine Learning, Statistics, Signal Processing and related areas to apply for a limited number of internship positions. A qualified candidate must demonstrate strong academic track record and strong coding skills. Many successful interns working with Prof. Chang in the past six years (when Prof. Chang headed Google Research) are now employed by top international companies (such as Google and Facebook) or studying at some US top universities (e.g., Stanford, Duke, CMU, UIUC, USC, etc.).
