Dol Guldur was a dreadful stronghold of Sauron in the south of Mirkwood, where he dwelt in secret as the Necromancer, until discovered by the Wise. Thráin II, king of the Durin's folk and father of Thorin Oakenshield was imprisoned in the Dungeons of Dol Guldur and the last of the Seven Rings of Dwarves was taken from him by Sauron. When the White Council finally assaulted Dol Guldur, Sauron had been long prepared and withdrew to Mordor where he started rebuilding the Dark Tower, but the Nazgul soon returned to reclaim Dol Guldur.
