Coastal residents are being urged to flee their homes for higher ground after a powerful 8.2 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami warning for the Pacific Ocean.
Tsunami sirens were going off in the city of Kodiak, Alaska, after the north-western US state was rocked by the strongest tremor this year and the largest in America for more than 50 years.
Jennifer Sonne, who shared a video clip which captured the sound of a siren as she moved to higher ground in Kodiak, tweeted: "Omfg 7+ earthquake near here. Tsunami warning for Kodiak.
"I am currently here. Staring at the ocean like [face screaming in fear emoji] and evacuating."
A tsunami warning was issued following the 8.2 magnitude earthquake
A tsunami watch was issued for Hawaii, which is about 2,500 miles from Alaska, while officials almost 7,000 miles away in New Zealand were assessing the potential threat.
The undersea earthquake, initially estimated to be 8.1 but then revised to 8.2, struck about 55 miles south-east of Perryville, Alaska, at a depth of about 30 miles.
It was followed by powerful undersea aftershocks as strong as 6.2 and 5.6, occurring about 85 miles from the city of Chignik.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center urged people living within the warning area to immediately leave their homes for higher ground.
It said: "Evacuate inland or to higher ground above and beyond designated tsunami hazard zones or move to an upper floor of a multi-story building depending on your situation.
"A tsunami with damaging waves and powerful currents is possible.

"Repeated coastal flooding is possible as waves arrive onshore, move inland, and drain back into the ocean.
"Strong and unusual waves, currents and inland flooding can drown or injure people and weaken or destroy structures on land and in water.
"Water filled with floating or submerged debris that can injure or kill people and weaken or destroy buildings and bridges is possible.
"Strong and unusual currents and waves in harbors, marinas, bays, and inlets may be especially destructive."
