MOSCOW, February 17. /TASS/. Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva should be aw
arded as a medal performance, despite finishing fourth in women's single skati
ng at the Beijing Olympics. This opinion was expressed to TASS by the Chairman
of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev.
Valieva finished fourth in women's singles. The Olympic champion was the Russi
an Anna Shcherbakova, the silver was won by another representative of Russia A
lexandra Trusova, the bronze - by the Japanese Kaori Sakamoto.
"These people achieved what they wanted," Svischev said. - We need to understa
nd how it happened that they took a sample in December, but opened it only bef
ore the Olympics. There was unprecedented pressure on our girl who didn't dese
rve it. She was a leader, everyone knew she was ahead, and what happened looke
d like a planned action."
"We propose to financially encourage and reward her, despite the fourth place
in individual competitions," the parliamentarian added.
On February 14, the Court of Arbitration for Sport did not satisfy the appeals
of the International Olympic Committee, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the
International Skating Union against the decision of the Disciplinary Committee
of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency to lift the suspension from the 15-year-old
athlete. The doping investigation is ongoing.
The Olympic Games in Beijing will end on February 20.
