They both missed at 2.38 in the first round of the jump-off, another two misses at 2.36 and McEwen missed at 2.34 before Kerr finally ended the first competition of the night only moments before the women’s 4x400 relay concluded the last session of track and field at the Stade de France.
“If I hadn’t cleared that jump or one very soon, we probably still would be out there,” Kerr said.
McEwen said he thought “we both got a little fatigued there at the end,” adding that he was thinking about the $50,000 prize for first place. “Most definitely, I got a family to feed. But, hey, we’re going to get back to the drawing boards and get better.”

New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr wins jump-off after Shelby McEwen misses out on shared Olympic gold medal
While Barshim and Tamberi went down in the annals of history for opting to share Tokyo gold, they may have made the same choice as McEwen this time round in Paris after World Athletics introduced prize money for Olympic champions.
“What would happen if it presented itself here again?” IOC commentator John Anderson recalled at the start of the jump-off.
“(Barshim said) ’well now there’s $50,000 for a gold medal, and we’re not sharing that. For that kind of money we would go back at it!”
Speaking after the Paris final, McEwen said the prize was “most definitely” part of his thinking.
“I got a family to feed,” he said.

Hamish Kerr wasn’t interested in sharing high jump gold with Shelby McEwen
“He said it first, and I agreed to it,” McEwen said. “At some point, I kind of got fatigued. I maybe would have shared it with him, for sure. But I agreed to it, and it was all good.”
McEwen never had decided what he would do in the event he tied for first place at the Olympics. He had a lot to consider. He was aware the United States had entered Saturday chasing China in a close race for most gold medals. He thought about the $50,000 prize World Athletics began awarding Olympic gold medalists this year, which meant $25,000 apiece.
“Most definitely,” McEwen said. “I got a family to feed.”
