这个“明明”有些想当然了。看看RMS是怎么定义的（from Wikipedia）：
the root mean square (RMS or RMS or rms) is defined as the square root of the mean square (the arithmetic mean of the squares of a set of numbers).
所以，重点是the square root of the mean square，主体是square root，而mean square是用来修饰square root的。也就是说这是个“根”，而不是个“方”。“均方根”的翻译正是正常汉语习惯的体现。

我觉得从根本上讲应该是the square root of the mean of square，注意我加了个of，虽然听起来很拗口，但意思其实更加准确，从这个角度讲应该翻译为“方均根”更合适，也更符合实际的算法。

均方根和方均根都可以，各自的优点就不说了，但也都有潜在的歧义。例如，方均根，可以理解成对均根的平方。严格来说那就需要说，xx的平方的代数平均的平方根。

直译并不好。
计算过程是平方-平均-求根，英语那种表达把mean square 当作一个整体非常无厘头，相当于读作均方、根。
