This is a science fiction written by a real scientist. Dr. Sagan is not only an established astronomer but also a prolific popular science writer, so I bear no grudge about the lengthy elaborations about radio astronomy, astrophysics and other science topics. On the contrary, those are rather interesting; they also serve as favorable staccatos among storylines.
Meanwhile, the occasional tirades between science and religion seem a little boring to me. Overall, the story telling is graceful, albeit not necessary top-notch (he could have used a good editor). The ever-escalating “palimpsect” should be one of most thrilling concepts in sci-fi history.
