Fast Web Services is an initiative at Sun Microsystems aimed at the
identification of performance problems in existing implementations of Web
Services standards. Fast Web Services explores the use of more efficient
binary encodings as an alternative to textual XML representations.

Sun does a performance comparison between their "Fast Web Services", using
ASN.1 and X.695 encoding, and traditional XML SOAP encoding. X.694 is a
specification that defines a mapping from XSD to ASN.1.
