Saturday, 19 February 2005
Having been paired together five times in UEFA competition, Real Madrid CF
and Juventus FC are familiar foes with honours evenly spread.
Pavel Nedved and Zinedine Zidane will meet again
The Turin giants hold the recent upper hand by virtue of their 2002/03 UEFA
Champions League semi-final defeat of Madrid, although they would ultimately
lose the final on penalties to AC Milan at Old Trafford. Madrid's Brazilian
duo Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos both scored in the Spanish capital, where a
David Trezeguet goal gave the visitors hope for the Stadio Delle Alpi return.
Trezeguet also set Juve on their way in Turin before Alessandro Del Piero and
Pavel Nedved extended the advantage. Former Juve playmaker Zinedine Zidane
scored a late consolation for Madrid.
In 1998, a Predrag Mijatovic goal in Amsterdam separated the sides as Madrid
ended a 38-year wait to win their sixth European Champion Clubs' Cup. The two
sides also met in the 1995/96 Champions League quarter-finals with Madrid
winning 1-0 at home and Juve 2-0 in Turin. Raúl González scored the only
goal at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, but goals from Del Piero and Michele
Padovano saw Juve through. The Italian side would go on to win the
competition 4-2 on penalties against AFC Ajax following a 1-1 draw in Rome.
They also locked horns in the second round of the 1986/87 European Cup when
Madrid won on penalties after both teams triumphed 1-0 at home. Emilio
Butrague?o scored for Madrid in the Spanish capital while Antonio Cabrini was
on the mark for Juve. Madrid would advance to the semi-finals before losing
out to FC Bayern München, the eventual beaten finalists.
The two teams first met in the 1961/62 European Cup when a replay in Paris
was required to find a winner. Madrid won 1-0 in Turin, Alfredo di Stéfano
settling Juve's first match against Spanish opposition in UEFA competition.
The Italians responded with a similar victory in the Spanish capital thanks
to Enrique Omar Sivori's goal, the first time Madrid had lost to an Italian
club at home. Madrid would win the replay at Parc des Princes following goals
from Felo, Luis Del Sol and Justo Tejada in a 3-1 success, but the Spanish
giants would lose to defending champions SL Benfica in the final at
Amsterdam's Olympisch stadium.
Overall, Madrid have entertained Italian opposition on 23 occasions, winning
19 times with two draws and as many defeats. They have visited Italy 22
times, winning five, drawing four and losing 13, although three of those five
wins have come in their last five trips; including a 3-0 defeat of AS Roma in
the group stage of this season's competition when Luís Figo scored twice.
Juventus won twice in Spain, drawn four times and lost the remaining eleven
matches. Their last win came at the quarter-final stage of the 2002/03
Champions League in Barcelona before they accounted for Madrid at the
subsequent stage. In Turin, Juve have also hosted Spanish rivals 17 times,
winning ten, drawing five and losing twice. Their first defeat was by Madrid
in 1962 and their only other loss in Turin came in last season's Champions
League to RC Deportivo La Coru?a at the first knockout round stage.
