Arsenal omen suits Bayern
Saturday, 19 February 2005
The last time FC Bayern München won the UEFA Champions League, in 2000/01 at
Valencia CF's expense, their journey included a home victory and an away draw
against Arsenal FC.

The two sides met in the second group stage, sharing four goals at Highbury
before a tenth-minute goal from Giovane Elber proved the difference between
the teams at the Olympiastadion. However, it was the game in London that
typified Bayern's resolve as, after falling to a two-goal deficit thanks to
goals from Thierry Henry and Nwankwo Kanu, the Bavarians hit back through
Michael Tarnat and Mehmet Scholl to make their point.
Nevertheless, both advanced from the group stage, with Arsenal succumbing to
Valencia. Bayern overcame Manchester United FC and Real Madrid CF before
accounting for the Londoners' conquerors in the San Siro showpiece.
In total, Arsenal have visited Germany on eight occasions winning twice,
drawing twice and losing the four remaining ties. Since their defeat by
Bayern in Munich, they have failed to win on German soil on three occasions:
losing to FC Schalke 04 and drawing against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the group
stages of the 2001/02 Champions League before losing to BV Borussia Dortmund
in the 2002/03 edition.
However, the Gunners will be hoping to make home advantage pay as six wins
and one draw from eight matches proves their effectiveness against Bundesliga
opposition in London. Schalke, Leverkusen and Dortmund all left Highbury on
the losing side with Henry scoring three times in total and both Dennis
Bergkamp and Fredrik Ljungberg twice.
Excluding defeats by Manchester United and Liverpool FC in UEFA competition
finals on neutral venues, Bayern's last loss against an English side came in
the second round of the 1993/94 UEFA Cup when they were beaten 2-1 at home by
Norwich City FC. Norwich's victory remains the only occasion that an English
team has defeated Bayern at the Olympiastadion in Europe. Ignoring the
Norwich aberration, Bayern have entertained English opposition on ten other
occasions, winning six and drawing four matches.
Away from home, Bayern have not lost in 20 years on English soil and their an
overall record shows two wins, seven draws and two defeats from eleven
engagements. Their last loss came against Everton FC in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup
Winners' Cup semi-final, with the Merseysiders going on to lift the trophy in
Rotterdam.
