Injury woe for Madrid and Bayern

There were some fresh injury concerns for sides needing second-leg victories
in Wednesday's first knockout round matches. uefa.com rounds up the latest
news from the clubs concerned.

Juventus FC v Real Madrid CF
Madrid are worried about David Beckham's fitness as they travel to Turin with
a 1-0 first-leg lead. The England captain was taken off in the second half of
Saturday's 1-1 draw with Valencia CF with a back injury. Madrid were without
Michael Owen (stomach bug), Zinedine Zidane (groin) and Raúl González (flu)
but all should recover to face Juve, while Ronaldo's goal will have boosted
his confidence. Last Wednesday, Madrid won 3-1 against Real Betis Balompié,
when Owen, Roberto Carlos and Iván Helguera scored. Míchel Salgado is still
out with a knee injury.

Recent flu victim David Trezeguet came on for the last nine minutes of Juve's
2-1 Serie A victory against AS Roma and looks likely to start against Madrid,
possibly spearheading a three-pronged attack with Alessandro Del Piero and
Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Fabio Cannavaro and Del Piero sealed Saturday's victory.
Juventus will be without the injured Pavel Nedved and Paolo Montero, as well
as the suspended Manuele Blasi, for the visit of Madrid.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen v Liverpool FC
Brazilian defenders Juan and Roque Junior both missed Leverkusen's 1-0
Bundesliga defeat at Hamburger SV on Saturday - although the former should be
fit for the visit of Liverpool. Juan's ankle injury is not considered serious
enough to rule him out of the BayArena contest, which Leverkusen must win by
two clear goals, after their 3-1 first-leg reverse, to have any chance of
progressing.

Djimi Traore, Harry Kewell and Dietmar Hamann all missed Liverpool's 1-0
defeat at Newcastle United FC on Saturday and are not guaranteed starters in
Leverkusen. Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek watched from the substitutes' bench
nursing a shin injury as 19-year-old Scott Carson made his first start.

AS Monaco FC v PSV Eindhoven
Monaco welcome PSV knowing they must overturn a 1-0 deficit if they are to
progress. They were held to a goalless draw at home by FC Metz on Saturday
but were given a lift when Uruguayan striker Ernesto Chevantón returned
after two months out with an ankle injury while Julien Rodriguez is back
after a thigh problem. Goalkeeper Flavio Roma is expected to be fit after his
own thigh injury, although defender Sébastien Squillaci (ankle) remains
doubtful. Javier Saviola's extra-time winner at Stade Rennais FC in midweek
earned Monaco a French Cup quarter-final place.

John de Jong's bruised toe is PSV's only fresh injury worry. The Eredivisie
leaders had their weekend game postponed due to snow but warmed up for the
second leg of their last-16 encounter by defeating Top Oss 6-1 in the Dutch
Cup quarter-finals on Thursday. Brazilian winter signing Robert made a
stunning debut by scoring three goals after Michael Lamey put PSV ahead.
DaMarcus Beasley scored the fourth goal and captain Mark van Bommel the last.
Wilfred Bouma and Johann Vogel were both rested.

Arsenal FC v FC Bayern München
Roy Makaay and Mehmet Scholl both have thigh injuries and will miss Bayern's
trip to London. The Bundesliga leaders have a 3-1 lead from the first leg but
will be without their star striker after Makaay went off injured in
Saturday's 1-0 win against Werder Bremen. Claudio Pizarro, who scored a
hat-trick in Bayern's 7-0 midweek German Cup triumph against SC Freiburg, is
likely to lead the line.

Thierry Henry's hat-trick gave Arsenal a 3-0 home Premiership victory against
Portsmouth FC on Saturday. But the London club, who defeated Sheffield United
FC on penalties in their midweek FA Cup replay, will be without two key
centre-halves against Bayern after Pascal Cygan joined Sol Campbell on the
sidelines with a thigh strain. Dennis Bergkamp, Edu, Robert Pires and José
Antonio Reyes could all return.
