The Tipster’s winners
It is time to prepare your team for UEFA Champions League Matchday 5. It is
not long before the 16 qualifiers for the knockout stage are known and you
will have to take this into account when you pick your team for Tuesday and
Wednesday.
Tip reconsidered
Tipster does not always get it right. Encouraging you to pick FC
Internazionale Milano's Adriano last week was a case in point. Although the
Brazilian was the second highest scoring player in the game on four goals and
seemed unstoppable, he is now to miss Inter's game away to Werder Bremen
through suspension. But that is why the game enables you to make
substitutions. If there are any players you think you need to change on your
team, make sure you do so.
Buffon's perfect record
That said, it is still worth taking a close look at the statistics before you
make any transfers. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon continues to produce
sterling performances at the back and the Bianconeri are yet to concede a
goal. With four clean sheets to his name, Buffon is five points ahead of his
closest rival, Chelsea FC's Petr Cech, and six ahead of Olympiacos CFP's
Antonios Nikopolidis. So look no further for a safe goalkeeper.
Olympiacos defence good value
In defence, Chelsea's John Terry continues to impress. Juventus players
Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta have put in solid performances too,
while Olympiacos defenders Gabriel Schürrer and Georgios Anatolakis are
cheaper options and also worth considering, even if they will need to be at
their best if the Greek club are to stay top of Group A.
Midfield names to consider
The biggest scorers in midfield on Matchday 4 were Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC's
Barukh Dego and Bremen's Johan Micoud. Dego scored two historic goals as
Maccabi recorded their first-ever victory in the Champions League by
defeating AFC Ajax 2-1. Meanwhile, French playmaker Micoud's three assists
put an end to RSC Anderlecht's hopes in Group G. Bremen's Daniel Jensen (10
points), Celtic FC's Alan Thompson (9) and Chelsea's Arjen Robben (9) also
showed good form.
Attacking solutions
Finally, in attack, Manchester United FC's Ruud Van Nistelrooij, Bremen's
Ivan Klasnic and Nilmar of Olympique Lyonnais were the top scorers. Van
Nistelrooij's four goals against AC Sparta Praha made him only the fourth
player to score four goals in a Champions League match, after Marco van
Basten, Simone Inzaghi and Dado Pr?o. Nilmar only played 20 minutes against
Fenerbah?e SK, but scored twice. Only two players on the current Dream Team
have not been mentioned yet: Inter's Dejan Stankovic and Real Madrid CF's Luí
s Figo.
