Farnborough Town are no strangers to Cup success. They captured the
nation's hearts with a fine run in the FA Cup 11 years ago, where a
4-0 replay victory against Halesowen in the first round earned
Farnborough a trip to Torquay United.
The Division Three side snatched a late equaliser to deny the
Conference side a famous win, but Farnborough would not be denied
and claimed their first League scalp with a pulsating 4-3 win in the
replay at Cherrywood Road.
Their reward was a mouthwatering clash with West Ham United of the
Premiership, and Farnborough gave their illustrious opponents a huge
scare at Upton Park where the Hammers needed an 89th-minute
equaliser to deny the non-league side victory.
Farnborough proved their performance was no fluke with another
inspirational display in the replay 10 days later, but West Ham won
2-1 to take their place in the fourth round.
Farnborough were back in the spotlight in 1995 when the television
cameras went to Cherrywood Road for a first-round replay against
Brentford. The tie generated Farnborough's record home attendance of
3,581, but the League side won 4-0.
And so to this season. Molesey, Harrogate, Southport and Darlington
have all been brushed aside by Graham Westley's team, and the draw
couldn't have been kinder to Farnborough, who will now prepare for the
biggest game in the club's history - a clash with the Double winners.
