Mr. "Banana Cross": Manni Kaltz



20 years on Hamburg's right wing: Manni Klatz.  

No other name is associated with HSV's success more than that of legendary
defender Manfred Kaltz. During all of HSV′s glorious victories of the 70
′s and 80′s, "Manni" was in the side.

In 1970, youth team manager Gerhard Heid took the all-rounder from TuS Altrip
to Hamburg. From that point on Kaltz began an unprecedented career in the
HSV jersey that broke numerous club records that still stand to this day
. He made a club-record 581 Bundesliga appearances for HSV, with Karl-Heinz
K?rbel being the only Bundesliga player to surpass this mark with 602 appearances
. Kaltz scored 76 Bundesliga goals in his career, with 52 of them, a league
record, coming from the penalty spot.

The career of the man with the "ingenious" right foot began in 1960 with
Vfl Neuhofen; in 1968 he was transferred to Altrip. The "Banana crosser,"
who took his place on the right side of a talented young team, was a permanent
fixture on the HSV teamsheet for the next twenty years from 1971 to 1991
, except for short spells at Bordeaux and Mühlhausen. The titles he has
won read like a history of the club's honours: European Cup winner in 1983
; Bundesliga winner in 1979, 1982, and 1983; German Cup winner in 1976 and
1987; and League Cup winner in 1973.

In the HSV jersey, Kaltz was the embodiment of the perfect attacking defender
and was, without question, world class in his position. His trademark was
the "Banana cross". His long crosses, which swung away from the goalkeeper
, were a rich source for headed goals, for which Horst Hrubesch was very
grateful.

Between 1975 and 1983, he was also a regular in the German national side,
receiving 69 caps over the period. He was at the 1978 and 1982 World Cups
, finishing runners up in Spain in 1982. But his greatest success with the
national team was winning the European Championship title in 1980 against
Belgium
