http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/top-gear-top-five-hot-hatches-2014-11-27The Fiesta ST is our top titchy hot hatch, but these are the five best big ‘uns
VW Golf R
Price: ?29,900
Specs: 297bhp, 280lb ft, 0-62mph 4.9secs, 155mph top speed, 40.9mpg, CO2 159g/km
Previous VW Golf Rs have been a bit leaden. This one isn't. In fact it's one of the best hot Golfs ever: sharp, direct, fast and fun. An Impreza from Germany.
BMW M135i
Price: ?30,845
Specs: 316bhp, 332lb ft, 0-62mph 5.1secs, 155mph top speed, 35.3mpg, CO2 188g/km
Not front-wheel drive, so some may say this isn't a hot hatch at all. But it is, and it's brilliant. Super fast, highly amusing and ?10,000 cheaper than the old 1M Coupe. Bargain.
Seat Leon Cupra 280
Price: ?27,210
Specs: 276bhp, 258lb ft, 0-62mph 5.7secs, 155mph top speed, 44.1mpg, CO2 154g/km
Like the Golf R, the Leon took us rather by surprise. That's thanks to its very effective differential, crisp, strong engine and plenty of cornering nous. Well done Seat, much better.
Ford Focus ST
Price: ?22,295
Specs: 247bhp, 250lb ft, 0-62mph 6.5secs, 154mph top speed, 39.2mpg, CO2 169g/km
A good, honest hot hatch. Tinge of blue collar, but there's something rather sophisticated about the way it drives. Also available as an estate, though the Golf R will soon be able to claim that, too.
Renaultsport Megane 275 Trophy
Price: ?28,930
Specs: 271bhp, 265lb ft, 0-62mph 6.0secs, 158mph top speed, 37.7mpg, CO2 174g/km
Take your driving seriously? Attend trackdays? Then buy a Megane, the hatch of choice for those of a more hardcore disposition. If you're feeling especially ballsy, buy the brilliant (though nearly ?40k) Trophy-R, with bonus Nürburgring bragging rights.
