In the tale of two Swedes, Chinese-owned Volvo reported U.S. sales up 42% in June, while fellow Sweden-based maker Saab remains shut down and trying to broker a Chinese rescue.

Volvo Cars of North America sales were just 7,100 units, but that was 42.1% better than June last year, and sales for the first six months are up 28.7%.

Sales were led by the S60 sports sedan, with 2,430 sold in June.

Other results from European makers reporting:

    Audi continued its string of best-ever months in the U.S. Its now six-for-six this year with its best June ever, up 16.9% vs. last June to 10,051 vehicles. Audi reported strong response to the sleek, just-out A7 hatchback, with 772 sold.
    Jaguar Land Rover reported a slight sales increase of 3% for June. Jaguar was the villain, its sales down 14% for the month, while Land Rover was up 13%. Range Rover Sport was LR's biggest seller, but that still amounted to just 1,233 sales.
    BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and Mini brands) reported sales up a combined 15.1% in June to 26,865. Year-to-date, the group is up 18% on sales of 143,521 BMW brand sales rose 12.8% in June to 19,182, led by the new X3 crossover, which was launched in January and has year-to-date sales up 270% from last year's sales of the old model and the 5 series sedan, up 60% year-to-date. Meanwhile, Mini set a June record with sale of 4,149, up 26% vs. last June and had sales for the first six months of 2011 up 42.3% to 29,816, which BMW says is the best six months Mini has had since its 2002 launch.
    June sales for Mercedes-Benz USA rose 18.8% vs. last year to 22,563, its best June on record. Six month sales were 118,021, up 10.4% The volume leaders were the E-Class at 5,798 vehicles and C-Class at 4,620. Diesel sales have been growing, with 1,231 diesels sold in June, up 128.4%, and 5,953 so far this year, up 188.3%.
