CARDIFF UNIVERSITY DOROTHY HODGKIN POSTGRADUATE AWARDS 2005
Four scholarships are available for full-time doctoral (PhD) programmes,
each for a minimum of three years, commencing academic session 2005/6. The
scholarships will provide full tuition fees at the overseas rate, plus an
annual stipend equivalent to that recommended by the UK Office of Science
and Technology (e.g. £12 for 2005/6).
The scholarships are co-funded by the three of the UK’s Research Councils
(EPSRC – 2 awards; ESRC – 1 award; MRC – 1 award) and two private sector
sponsors (Hutchison-Whampoa – 2 awards; BP – 2 awards). Each of the four
successful scholars will ‘badged’ as being co-sponsored by one of the
above Research Councils and one of the above private sector contributors.
Who is eligible?
· Applicants must be nationals of India, China, Hong Kong, Russia or
one of the qualifying developing countries, see:
http://www.ost.gov.uk/research/dha.doc. (Please note, however, that
Hutchison-Whampoa will support scholars who are nationals of mainland China
or Hong Kong only.)
· Applicants must be highly qualified and motivated – with an
outstanding academic record and be able to demonstrate excellent research
potential.
· Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, at least the equivalent of
a UK first-class honours degree.
· Applicants must satisfy the English language competency requirements
stipulated by the director of the relevant programme.

· The proposed area of study must fall within the remit of one of the

· Applicants should apply using the standard Cardiff University
application form for postgraduate study and indicate clearly the academic
school and area of research that is intended. The application form and

· Applicants should include with their application, two referees’
reports in sealed envelopes. At least one of the referees should be a
university teacher, have a good knowledge of the applicant’s academic
ability and achievements, and indicate, where possible, the applicant’s
ranking in his/her class.
· Applicants should also include copies of transcripts and degree
certificates.
· Applicants should include in their ‘previous experience’ reference
to any research projects undertaken, including at Bachelors/Masters level,
and any publications arising from this research.
· Applicants should indicate in their ‘research proposal’ how their
proposed project falls within the remit of one, or more, of the relevant
Research Councils.
· Applicants should indicate clearly on the application that they wish
to apply for a 2005 Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award.
· Applicants are also advised to contact the postgraduate admissions
tutor in their proposed academic school to discuss their applications. Only
those applications that have the support of the academic school will be
considered for the awards.
· The closing date for applications is 4 April 2005.
