Reggie Released as Amnesty Player
By Conrad Brunner / Indianapolis, Aug. 15, 2005
He's had his retirement ceremony and driven off into the California sunset in h
is fabulous Bentley.
In other words, Reggie Miller's career with the Pacers ended in May. Lest there
be any lingering doubt, it was made certain with Monday's announcement the Pac
ers opted to waive Miller under the NBA's amnesty provision.
Franchise CEO and President Donnie Walsh said he tried to convince Miller to com
e back for one more season but relented only when it became clear the Pacers' a
ll-time leading scorer would not be swayed from his decision to retire.
"He's made up his mind he can't do it anymore," Walsh said, "so
he goes on, has a great life and we get relief from the luxury tax – and we ha
ve all the same players left, whether they're on our team or they're traded.&q
uot;
A one-time-only option in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the amnesty c
lause allows teams to waive a player in order to reduce the luxury tax penalty.
Miller will still be paid (he has one more season at a reported $6.1 million rem
aining) and his contract will count against the salary cap. Teams also had the o
ption of waiving the remaining salary of a player no longer with the team.
"We considered a lot of possibilities," Walsh said, "and this was
our best option."
Miller, who played with the Pacers for the entirety of his 18 seasons, announced
last season that he would end his playing career at the conclusion of the 2005
NBA Playoffs. Though Miller could not be reached for comment, Walsh said he had
no qualms about the move.
“I’ve spoken with Reggie and he is fine with it," Walsh said. "This
will go down as his final assist.”
Midnight Monday is the deadline for teams to exercise their option under the amn
esty clause. Teams cannot re-sign the players they waive until their current con
tracts expire.

Fund-raiser Set for Oct. 29 in Indianapolis
"Monster Masquerade" to Honor Reggie
Pacers Foundation News Release / Aug. 8, 2005
Indiana Pacers basketball legend Reggie Miller, who has consistently demonstrat
ed his commitment to area youth during his phenomenal 18-year career, will be ho
nored at the fourth annual Monster Masquerade, a fundraiser for Pacers Foundatio
n, Inc. and Simon Youth Foundation. This year's event, an evening of frightenin
g fun and entertainment, will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Indiana Roof Bal
lroom.
A likely inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in five years, Mille
r is the NBA's all-time leader in 3-point field goals made with 2,560 and is 12
th on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 25,267 points. Miller rewrote the Pa
cers' record book, retiring as the franchise leader in 13 different statistical
categories.
Off the court, Miller was equally impressive. He was the 2004 recipient of the N
BA's J. Walter Kennedy Service Award; in 2002, he was named by USA Weekend as o
ne of the magazine's Most Caring Athletes; he donated $1,000 for every 3-point
field goal made (totaling $206,000) during the 2001-02 season and playoffs to th
e American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund; he started the Reggie Miller Foundati
on to assist victims, particularly children, of fires; he has been a frequent vi
sitor to Indianapolis children's hospitals and an active participant in the Mak
e-A-Wish Foundation. In nearly all cases, Miller shied away from any publicity f
or his benevolence.
His accomplishments, on and off the court, make Miller an obvious choice to be f
eted at this year's Monster Masquerade. "Being honored at this year's Mon
ster Masquerade is a great honor for me for two reasons," said Miller. &quo
t;Most importantly is that proceeds from the event go to Foundations to help you
th. The other reason is the previous honorees are Donnie Walsh, Clark Kellogg an
d Bob Leonard, three people I have great respect for. To be included on a list w
ith those three individuals is a tremendous pleasure for me."
"His career was about a lot more than numbers," said Pacers Sports &am
p; Entertainment CEO/President Donnie Walsh. "His competitive spirit, profe
ssionalism, class and leadership by example helped elevate our franchise to a wh
ole new level in the NBA.
"He also made himself a big part of the community, putting down roots here
and choosing to remain in Indiana when he could have taken opportunities to play
on bigger stages. Very few players in the history of any sport have shown that
kind of loyalty to a team, a city and its fans."
Major sponsors to date for Monster Masquerade include: Platinum sponsor Pacers S
ports & Entertainment and Gold sponsors Dann Pecar, Newman and Kleiman, P.C.
; Fifth Third Bank, Central Indiana; FSN Midwest; Levy Restaurants; Miller Brewi
ng Company; Republic Services of Indiana; and St.Vincent Hospital.
This once-in-a-lifetime Monster Masquerade includes cocktails, followed by a sum
ptuous dinner, dancing and a variety of entertainment. A limited number of spons
orship opportunities are available. Please contact Rick Markoff, at Simon Youth
Foundation, (317) 263-2341 for information.
Tickets are $300 each and can be purchased individually or a table of eight for
$2,400. Tickets are available by calling Sarah Baird at Pacers Foundation, Inc.,
(317) 917-2864.
Proceeds from Monster Masquerade help support the work of Pacers Foundation, Inc
. and Simon Youth Foundation. Net proceeds of the event are shared by the two or
ganizations dedicated to the betterment of youth.
Since its inception in 1993, Pacers Foundation has awarded more than $4 million
in grants, scholarships and community ticket blocks. The foundation is dedicated
to inspiring and motivating youth to become involved in community activities, t
ake their education seriously, set personal goals, visualize their dreams and ta
ke responsibility for their own lives and neighborhoods. Its mission is to touch
the lives of Indiana's children in a positive way.
Simon Youth Foundation, established in 1998, has awarded more than $2.4 million
in one-time and renewable monetary scholarships. The foundation exists to foster
and improve educational opportunities, career development and life skills for a
t-risk youth through focused programs and initiatives. SYF accomplishes its miss
ion through two initiatives: Education Resource Centers that enable students to
complete high school and scholarship programs that enable graduates to pursue po
stsecondary education opportunities.
