kings fans have a new toy....hes quite the special toy and hes capable of taking kings fans thru all sorts of enjoyable experiences....
but, like with any new toy, theres an instructional manual that, if followed, will greatly enhance ur new experience...
failure to do so could result in the warranty being voided and loss of enjoyment...
1. First and foremost, NEVER take anything ron says very seriously. whether good or bad, u are much better off letting it go in one ear and out the other...DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, TAKE ANYTHING HE SAYS PERSONALLY. If he says something that is just totally out and out unacceptable, then know 2 things. One, he doesnt mean it and two he will apologize and retract sooner or later. It never fails.
if u follow only one rule, follow this one, no matter how difficult...its guaranteed to make the experience far more enjoyable...
2. Realize ron has insecurity issues. Not unlike most, he needs to feel wanted and needed. However, not unlike alot of adults and most children, he doesnt deal very well when he doesnt feel these things. So its recommended u dont boo him among other things. I dont anticipate this being a problem in sactown. some of the best, most loyal fans in the league....
3. Realize rons actions speak to the real truth of how he feels. You are about to witness a player that wants to win as much as anyone ever has. Its how he feels good about himself. Hes not a good loser, make no mistake. He takes it personally. If the kings lose, its especially advisable to remember Rule 1. Realize noone plays with more effort and intensity for every minute they are on the floor than ur new toy. For these reasons, when in doubt, give him the benefit of the doubt. I think u will find it easy to do, in most cases. On those rare times its not so easy, just do it anyway and wait till he takes the court again and u will remember why u did.
4. Anticipate there will be something that eventually happens that just leaves u shaking ur head in bewilderment. Its ok. Ron has issues and his mind follows the beat of a different drum than most of us are familiar with. Realize it, dont try to understand it. Trying to do so will only cause frustration.
5. Dont try to rationalize the thoughts of an irrational person. Ron can be irrational. Nuff said.
6. Dont expect Ron to be a leader. Hes not, not in the true sense of the word. However he will lead by example on the court. Expect the overall intensity level to be raised by the whole team. It will happen. Especially on the defensive end. You also can probably expect Brad Miller to regain some of his tough guy image. It was together with Ron that really manifested such. It seems to have disappeared slowly but surely in Kings country.
7. Realize his offensive game is very unorthodox. It will often look like a bull in a china shop. Which is probably a very good analogy. But its become very very effective. He has an incredible basketball IQ. This is often forgotten as one could make a case for him not having the highest overall IQ. Hes capable of being a very good team basketball player.
8. Like all great players, he will break out of the offense from time to time and try to do things on his own. Which can drive u crazy if u let it. Understand it only comes from such a huge desire to win and him having a mismatch pretty much at all times. He does it. All great players do it. Just try to keep it in perspective.
9. Realize ur new toy is far from perfect. Try to understand that despite his flaws u can gain a tremendous amount of enjoyment just watching him play as well as the winning that is a direct result of said play. Its the classic case of taking the bad with the good. There will be bad, but in most cases, it will be far outweighed by the good. Dwell on the good, and u are in for a very enjoyable experience. Noone should be expected to condone the mistakes, just not dwell on them any more than anything else.
10. Hang on. Youre in for one wild ride. Its just like riding one of the greatest roller coasters in the world. It has its ups and downs, and at times it might scare the crap out of u. But overall its just one thrill after another. And the overall experience to the trained rider is unsurpassed.
