Abstract
The mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs), SiO2 and TiO2, with high surface area and porosity were prepared by the sol-gel method with/without ionic liquid as template. These MMOs were further treated by solvent extraction and freeze drying or calcinations to remove the ionic liquid. The MMOs were characterized by FTIR, NMR, SEM, BET, and XRD to investigate their differences in morphological properties.
The MMOs were, then, made in nano-powder form and added in Nafion as filler to prepare the nanocomposite polymer electrolyte membranes (NF-MMO) and use as the proton exchange membranes for fuel cell (PEMFC). The effect of the MMO fillers on performances of the H2/O2 PEMFCs with the as-prepared NF-MMOs were studied over 65-120 ◦C under two relative humidity (RH) conditions. The results showed that the effect of the fillers on the performance of the PEMFC was temperature and humidity dependent and not only related to the filler’s specific surface area but also the size and the amount of mesopores which were varied with the condition of the MMO prepared.
