Dear Students:
If you are expecting to complete your Master Degree or Bachelor Degree (First
Class Honor) in Jun/July, 2009 in the areas of Chemical Engineering,
Environmental Engineering, Polymer Engineering and Applied Chemistry, you are
invited to apply for PhD study at Singapore Membrane Technology Centre
(SMTC), Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.
There are several PhD scholarships available for August 2009's enrollment, to
be offered by SMTC at NTU. Each scholarship is good for 4 years, and carries
a monthly stipend of S$2000 initially and S$2500 after confirmation of
candidature (usually within the first 18 months). The research area is
related to membrane technology applied in water/water treatments or water
reuse.
Should you be interested in applying for this scholarship and to pursue your
PhD in the above-mentioned field at NTU, please contact A/P Wang Rong at
RWang@ntu.edu.sg as early as possible (before December, 2009) by sending your
CV and transcripts via email.
For good candidates without TOEFL and GRE scores, we may arrange for internal
tests (English Proficiency Test (EPT) and Technical Proficiency Test (TPT))
in China.
Thank you very much for your attention.
SMTC, Singapore
SINGAPORE MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
The Singapore Membrane Technology Centre (SMTC) is established to do
fundamental and applied research in membranes for environment and water
technology (EWT). The SMTC is part of the Nanyang Environment & Water
Research Institute 'ecosystem'.
The Objectives of SMTC include:
Education & Training ~ provide PhDs and Researchers in membranes for EWT;
Research & Development ~research with links to industry and international
community;
Industry & Application ~ act as incubator for novel membrane technology in
EWT.
Membrane Technology
Membranes are fine 'filters' capable of removing salts, organics, virus,
bacteria and colloids from water. Membrane research is multidisciplinary
involving scientists and engineers in experimental and theoretical work. A
wide range of projects of interest to the Water Industry are being studied in
the SMTC including;
o Desalination ~ improved and novel
o Membrane distillation ~ solar driven
o Membrane bioreactors ~ carbon neutral
o Trace pollutant removal with membranes
o NeWater for water reclamation
o Novel membranes for water/wastewater
o Sensors for smart membrane systems
o Decentralized membranes for water/wastewater
Scholarships for PhDs
If you have a good academic record and English skills and an interest in
membrane technology you can apply to study for a PhD in the SMTC. Upon
admission, you may be eligible for a scholarship that includes the tuition
fee and a stipend of S$2K and S$2.5K per month before and
after PhD confirmation examination respectively for living expenses.
Benefits
o Membrane technology and applications for EWT is a fast growing area that
offers exciting research opportunities
o A strong demand for PhDs and researchers well trained in membrane
technology for the water and environmental industries in Singapore.
o SMTC projects are fundamental & applied, usually with Industry & PUB links.
o SMTC provides strong group support & involves experienced Post Doc fellows;
o A period of 3 to 6 months in an overseas lab gives international experience.
