We were both on the cusp of forty, ten years deep into a marriage that had
once promised forever. Our eight-year-old son was a constant reminder of the
life we'd built together, a life that now felt like a distant memory.
She'd begun as a whirlwind of affection, showering me with love notes and
gifts. But as the initial spark faded, so too did her tenderness. I now
suspect her early displays of love were merely a calculated performance, a
carefully crafted act to ensnare my heart.
Once the wedding bells had chimed, her true nature emerged. A cruel,
insidious transformation took hold. She'd belittle me, openly flirt with
other men, and constantly compare me to more successful acquaintances. Every
word was a dagger to my self-esteem, particularly when it came to our
intimate life.
Over time, I'd retreated into a shell of self-doubt. The desire for physical
intimacy had withered, replaced by a gnawing fear of failure. When we did
share a bed, it was often at her insistence, and even then, I'd falter,
haunted by her critical gaze.
Recently, a devastating truth was laid bare: she'd been betraying me with a
coworker. When confronted, she denied it at first, then brazenly blamed me
for her infidelity, claiming I hadn't given her the attention she craved.
Jealousy and distrust now consumed me. Any attempt to discuss our shattered
relationship was met with stonewalling. The future, once filled with hope,
now seemed bleak and uncertain.
