I think the classic Marxist view on religion still rings true: that religion derives its strength from ignorance. In modern society where knowledge prevails thoroughly, it then takes the form of anti-intellectualism, which leads to the commonly observed correlation between religious ferver and equal zeal in denying science.
Therefore, the so called "adaptation" of religion of modern society, or "modernization", is really not a challenge faced by religion itself but rather the society. Whichever society manages to save a large enough majority of its citizen from ignorance ends up with a "modernized" religion, which can be observed from the high negative correlation between HDI and religious ferver of a society.
