Why Lippi's Inter crashed
Sunday 9 March, 2008
As Inter celebrate their centenary, Massimo Moratti analyses why Marcello
Lippi failed so spectacularly at the club.
“Lippi didn’t quite work out because the fans never got behind him and we
also made mistakes in the transfer campaign we did in his first year,”
explained the President.
“That was my error, leaving a great deal in the hands of the Coaches. I was
very disappointed and frightened by the situation, so I called in Lippi and
left it all up to him.
“One should never do that, not because the tactician is wrong, but rather
because he needs dialogue to help him reach a decision.
“We made mistakes in that transfer policy and it all went downhill from
there.”
Lippi moved from Juventus to the San Siro in 1999 and managed 18 Serie A
wins, seven draws and 11 defeats.
He resigned after the opening game of the 2000-01 season, having already
exited the Champions League in the preliminary round.
