Project description
Project One: Evaluation of anaerobic co-digestion
Biogas plants often use a variety of different substrates for the process, so called co-digestion, which have raised questions regarding co-digestion effects. It has been found that mixing of different substrates in various proportions result in an either synergistic or antagonistic effect on the biogas production. This effect depends on the composition of the mix in terms of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen sources as well as the availability of nutrients. However, the outcome of co-digestion is hard to predict and the knowledge within this area is limited.
The purpose of this research project is to investigate the possibility of creating a model that finds the optimal mixing ratios between different substrates, with the aid of experimental data from co-digesting the various substrates using automatic methane potential test system (AMPTS).
Project Two: Anaerobic dry fermentation for organic fraction of municipal solid waste and agricultural residues
Process technologies for dry fermentation are diverse compared to wet fermentation processes. The process can be continuous or batch wise. The most interesting process configuration is a garage type batch fermentor with a gas tight port for substrate loading with tractor or wheel loader and systems for heating and percolation. This process requires no advanced pretreatment and the available farm equipment can be used to handle the biomass. The low liquid content only requires small pipes and pumping devices and also reduces the volumes of substrate and digestate, which simplifies transportation and storing. Another advantage is that the workload of feeding the reactor is concentrated to one day per month instead of being spread out over all the days of the month. However the dry fermentation process still needs to be further characterized and optimized in terms of effects of substrate to inoculums ratio and sequence control of multi-fermentors, etc.
The aim of this research work is to study and optimize the process parameters of the dry fermentation process running in batch mode using automatic methane potential test system (AMPTS). The focus will be on the variable process parameters TS-percentage, substrate to inoculum ratio and process sequence control.
Qualifications
We are looking for two postgraduate students, i.e. one PhD student and one Master student, within relevant research field from Chinese universities or research institutes.
The candidates should have background of environmental engineering, environmental biotechnology or relevant fields. Previous research experience within biogas and/or wastewater treatment sector is preferred. In addition, you are independent, structured, goal orientated, self motivated and genuinely interested in joining a dynamic project team with strong ambitions of technical career development. Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is also appreciated.
The implementation of these two research projects will be based in Beijing with a close research cooperation of local partner.
