About Responsible Sourcing Initiative:
Clean by Design is an innovative program to use the buying power of multinational corporations as a lever to reduce the environmental impacts of their suppliers abroad. Clean by Design focuses on improving process efficiency to reduce waste and emissions and improve the environment.
In the past decade, globalization has brought dramatic change to the developing world, helping to lift millions out of poverty and presenting a unique opportunity for multi-national corporations to play a positive role in improving environmental and health standards in developing countries, through their business relationships with suppliers and with participation from the government in those countries.
To take advantage of this opportunity, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Gap, Inc., Levi Strauss & Co., Wal-Mart, H&M, Nike, Li & Fung have launched the Responsible Sourcing Initiative to catalyze environmental improvement in the apparel manufacturing sector. The goal is to find practical, low-cost, or even cost-saving opportunities to increase operational efficiencies at supplier textile factories, while reducing materials, water and energy use and decreasing waste/emissions. In addition, the initiative will also work with Chinese government officials and local experts to increase the technical capacity of both, in order to improve environmental performance with efficiency improvements in this industrial sector.
The RSI team in Beijing has also worked on projects related to inducing investment, the electronics sector, and other topics related to environmental and energy issues in China.
