Journalism and Communication Internship Description

Friendly PA and Friendly Pittsburgh is part of a China-focused Marketing Initiative, founded by Idea Foundry, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit and joint by Pennsylvania State office of International Business Development, Pittsburgh Regional Alliance and VisitPittsburgh. Friendly PA and Friendly Pittsburgh aim to introduce education, tourism and business/investment/immigration/real estate, Chinese in PA/ Chinese in Pittsburgh  to give our Chinese audience a wholesome as well as personal picture of study, travel, business and tourism situation in the state and Pittsburgh region.

Start Date:
Mid-September, as early as possible

Structure:
Approximately 30 hours/month;
Schedule is flexible but weekends or evening work might be needed due to the time difference between China and USA;
One semester is preferred;
The salary is very competitive.

Position Description:
Friendly PA and Friendly Pittsburgh projects of Idea Foundry, an American nonprofit, seeks for a undergraduate-level journalism and communication intern to help us conduct interview and write articles, and publicize our work on social media platforms. As a nonprofit project team, we hope our intern could have a true interest in our initiative, share our value and passion, and bring quality work and creative ideas to this team. This paid position would be a great opportunity to utilize and better your skills and gain more hands-on experience in journalism and communication.

Job Responsibilities:

Interviews and Writing articles
o    Assist Communication Manager to identify interviewees and coordinate interview schedules;
o    Conduct 3 interviews per month and write articles for Chinese in PA series;
o    Proofread, format and edit reports, articles or other written materials as necessary;

Social Media Coordination
o    Assist Communication Manager to publish the articles on WeChat, Weibo and other social media platforms;
o    Collaborate with colleagues in Pittsburgh office on social media management, including gathering PA/ Pittsburgh – related news, videos or articles, updating news feed, and maintaining and helping promote social media accounts;
o    Performs related duties as required;

Qualifications:

o    College juniors and seniors, preferably in Journalism, or Communications;
o    Previous internship or interview and writing experience preferred;
o    Excellent writing skills in Chinese and strong writing skills in English, strong oral English a plus;
o    Excellent editing, formatting and organizational skills, and highly detailed-oriented;
o    Strong initiative and a self starter who can be very responsive, take direction and contribute creative ideas;
o    The ability to work independently on projects while meeting deadlines;
o    Rich experience with Weibo would be a plus!
o    Hopefully you could have an interest in nonprofit and education field and share the same passion and value.
o    Open but not limited to Chinese nationals.
