Position Overview:
MSCI ESG Research, part of MSCI Inc. is seeking 6-month internship candidates in Beijing to work with its local ESG Ratings team.
An ESG Ratings intern is expected to have fluent Mandarin and English skills and be interested in research on sustainability and investment themes. The intern will research information about companies’ environmental, social, and governance performance, as well as traditional financial risk, using a variety of sources.
Over the course of their internship, interns will be assigned a certain number of companies to assist senior analysts to research. Depending on their subject matter interests and background, they will also be assigned one or two major or standalone research projects, similar to the following examples:
International regulatory developments in: chemical safety; privacy and data security; financial product design and marketing; banning of sensitive raw materials, e.g. timber, palm oil, cotton
Comparative corporate governance standards and customs across Asia and emerging markets
Financial industries: information gathering and benchmarking of geographic assets sensitive to climate change
Extractives industries: information gathering and benchmarking on industry-specific data
Retail industries: information gathering and benchmarking on private label products, raw materials usage
This exciting role provides the opportunity to be involved in the integration of sustainability themes into investment research, particularly for fast-growing Asian companies. We are offering 6-month internships that commence as early as Jun 2016, with exact timing and length being negotiable.
Responsibilities:
Searching for, procuring, and processing information about large publicly listed companies using multiple methods, techniques and sources, with a focus on Asian emerging markets.
Working with many different types of information sources (i.e. lengthy annual reports, websites, quantitative data feeds, web crawlers), types of information (i.e. quantitative data, key performance indicators, prose narratives), topics or subject matters (i.e. traditional financial risk, corporate governance, and sustainability) and types of analysis (i.e. rules-based, subjective analysis, written summaries).
Capturing and transforming raw data about companies from local language into meaningful analysis in a high standard of written English.
Provide research support to senior analysts.
Present research findings to the relevant teams.
Ownership and management of one or two defined research tasks that contribute to the ESG team’s methodology development and/or information resource management.
Desired Experience and Qualifications:
Strong background in data collection and research analysis
Ability to multi-task and efficiently present research results to internal groups
General awareness of current affairs in Asian emerging markets and strong interest in news and market search
Can work under the pressure of deadlines and deliver work product on time
Efficient team player who communicates effectives and who can also work independently without constant supervision
Advanced degree in economic s or sustainability related field (masters or PhD) is preferred but not required
Business fluency in another Asian language, especially Korean, is very highly valued
Previous internship experience in the sustainability field is preferred but not required. E.g.:
Experience in ESG Research or corporate social responsibility industries, or
Relevant financial services experience that includes exposure to ESG investment, or
Relevant public policy or academic or NGO experience

Fluent spoken and written English
Must be a P.R. China passport holder
Must be currently enrolled in a university degree or program of study for the entire duration of internship
Must be able to commit to minimum of 3 days per week

The Analytical Quality Assurance (Analytical QA) team is a company-wide shared resource responsible for communicating with the Product Management, Research, and Development teams to develop and implement testing processes and procedures for industry adopted financial instruments, statistics, stress tests and reporting. Our goal is to ensure the 'highest level quality' and the 'fastest time to market' in our industry for our financial products. This is an exciting role that lies on the cusp of finance and technology. As a key member of this team, the candidate will have direct responsibility for ensuring that MSCI market-leading analytics applications continue to provide clients exceptional analytics quality and sophistication. The members of the Analytical QA team work on complex issues, where analysis is required to determine the root source of problems and associated factors. It is a must that the candidate is detail-oriented and capable to perform multi-task assignments in a timely and independent fashion.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / EXPECTATIONS:
The candidate will have opportunity to work on innovative financial applications utilizing the latest technologies and will be responsible for understanding client needs and for ensuring that product specifications, functionality and underlying analytics fulfill client needs. The members of our Analytical QA team have the opportunity to contribute in a broad set of roles including: studying functional, non-functional and analytic specifications, developing test plans and test cases, verifying formulas, implementing and using automated test tools, and estimating level of effort of project requirements.
The candidate will be exposed on a daily basis to a range of topics that require domain knowledge in the following areas:
Performance Analytics
Equity and Fixed income multi-factor models
Equity, Fixed Income, Interest Rate and FX instruments and derivatives valuation models
The candidate will also have responsibilities on:
Analyze and extend our analytics regression tests to ensure complete and efficient coverage for all analytics engine statistics and asset types.
Develop and extend independent validation tools and documentation used to ensure accuracy for all numbers produced by our analytics engines.
Work with the Research and Analytics Development teams to evaluate manual and regression test differences, check requirements, and extend test case coverage.
Create and maintain appropriate documentation on all processes and procedures.
Ensure that all daily test processes are completed successfully and resolve problems with the assistance of the research and development teams.
Assist in streamlining and improving the daily test processes
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Outstanding mathematical and analytical skills
Detail oriented and logical thought process
Must be willing to work in a global team environment and able to move things forward on projects via strong written and oral proficiency in English.
Creativity in problem solving for validation of complex models/algorithms
Interest working in an environment that combines finance and technology. This position includes maintenance of regression machines so strong interest/comfort working with software and technology is a must. Familiarity with xml and/or Java is a plus
Adapts quickly and easily to working within a rapidly evolving state-of-the-art software architecture
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with Matlab and/or Java programming
Experience in software testing and/or development lifecycle
Master's degree with focus in finance or a degree in mathematics, physics, statistics, or another quantitative field with a strong knowledge of finance OR quantitative BA plus five years relevant experience
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) a plus
Formal QA-process training a plus
