Microsoft Research Asia is recruiting interns for Stars of Tomorrow Internship Program.
微软亚洲研究院是微软公司在美国本土之外最大的基础科研机构，被美国著名技术杂志MIT 《Technology Review》誉为“世界上最火的计算机实验室”。 自1998年成立以来，启动了面向亚太区高校博士生、硕士生和优秀本科生的“明日之星”实习生项目。该项目由微软亚洲研究院和国内外高校共同执行，旨在培养高素质的计算机基础研究人才。实习生进入微软亚洲研究院后深入到每个研究小组进行为期三个月或更长时间的实习。截止至2010年10月，已有4300名来自亚太区高校的学生到微软亚洲研究院实习，平均每年有400个实习机会开放给所有的学生。

Group Overview
The University Relations (UR) program nurtures strong mutually supportive partnerships between MSR Asia and the academic community. Since MSR Asia’s inception, the University Relations program has recognized the inherent value of the academic research community and the need for collaboration between academia and industry to advance the state-of-the-art in computer science. The foundation for all Microsoft Research’s University Relations efforts is a deep respect for the “virtuous cycle” that is created when university and industry researchers work together.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Work with experienced software developers and project managers in MSRA on Microsoft Academic Search project to collect and verify publication data of given organizations and authors.
2. Draft and collect information for brochures, newsletters, video, feature stories and etc.
3. Provide support to UR internal and external events.
Required Qualifications:
1. Good at data collection and analysis;
2. Proved student activity organization experience;
3. Strong English and Chinese writing skills;
4. Good communication skill and excellent teamwork;
5. Good attitude on daily work; cautious, passionate;
6. Computer Science related background;
7. Can work at least 3 months or longer; can get advisor’s approval;
互联网搜索与挖掘组
Position: Full-time Intern
Group: Web Search & Mining
Quantity: 1
Work Location: Beijing
Group Overview
Researchers in the Web Search & Mining Group are turning their ideas into reality in areas such as web search, computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning. Projects pushing the state-of-the-art forward include search related research.
Roles & Responsibilities
The interns will be working with Xin-Jing Wang, on applications of text to image translation via large-scale image understanding using web image search, computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning techniques. The interns will be required to solve new problems and conduct programming and experiment for various research projects.
Required Qualifications:
1.MS/PhD in Computer Science or any related technical field and possess the following skills;
2.Requirements in the following research areas
3.Strong in signal and image processing
4.Solid mathematics (linear algebra, optimization, statistics)
5.Background in machine learning (clustering, learning, classification)
6.Good programming skills or have related project experience;
7.Good reading, written, and oral English;

无线传感组：

Roles and Responsibilities
Research and development in the areas of: wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, mobile services and applications, and systems support for mobility.
Required Qualification
1.Strong programming skills
2.Interested in the area of mobility, wireless networking, data processing, and systems research
3.Solid foundation in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field
4.Passionate about computing technology and tools
5.Good at English reading and writing

硬件计算组:
Position: Full-time Intern
Group: Hardware Computing
Quantity: 1

Group Overview
Push forward the state of the art in hardware computing to innovate in software services and to realize novel devices. Research fundamental computer architecture, identifies hardware opportunities in specific services, and builds integrated hardware/software solutions. Extrapolate hardware trends, study new interaction models, and construct working prototypes.
Roles & Responsibilities
The interns will work on exploring approaches/strategies for efficiently managing storage hierarchy with novel devices like Flash memory. The interns will be required to design and implement system level software/firmware on realistic hardware platforms, including application-level data structures, or file system/IO subsystem, or device drivers/on-board firmware. If qualified, the interns’ work will be both used in realistic systems, and used to conduct experiments for academic papers.
Required Qualifications:
1.Can commit at least 3 months full-time internship, with your advisor’s approval
2.Strong skills in C/C++
3.Solid knowledge and experiences in system level software development
4.Experiences in I/O management (file system, disk I/O optimization, SAN) is highly preferred
5.Experiences in Flash memory or SSD (solid state disk) is highly preferred
6.Experiences in search engine is a plus
7.Capability to quickly learn from English literature is a plus
8.Majoring in Computer Science or related technical background is a plus
语音组：
Position: Full-time Intern
Group: Speech Group
Quantity: 2

Group Overview
Using our voices to communicate continues to be the most natural and the easiest way to exchange ideas and thoughts. At MSR Asia, the Speech Group is working hard to turn their ideas into reality and improve spoken-language technologies, enable human-computer voice interaction, and enrich human-to-human voice communications. The group’s current focus includes speech recognition to enable computers to facilitate access to data, help create content, and perform tasks; speech synthesis to enable computers to speak with a human-sounding voice, to respond and provide information, and to read; and spoken-document retrieval and processing to enrich communication
Roles & Responsibilities
We require two students to perform research into the exciting area of automatically trainable speech synthesis. This technology will be applied to various human-computer communication or telecommunication systems, e.g. information inquiry, reservation and ordering, and reading emails. The student will learn many skills in speech processing, audio processing, as well as some software development.
Required Qualifications:
1.Good at C++ coding
2.Good knowledge on machine learning and pattern recognition
3.Good team-working and communication skill
4.Good at learning
5.Good experiences on text, speech and audio signal processing
6.6+ months full-time internship with supervisor’s permission
视觉计算组：

Group: Visual Computing

Group Overview
Researchers in the Visual Computing Group focus on research in computer vision and image/video based machine learning and pattern recognition. They are pushing state-of-the-art research and technologies in image/video analysis and understanding.
Roles & Responsibilities
The intern will be working with Dr. Zhouchen Lin to produce high quality codes, especially GPU codes, for algorithms that researchers have invented. The codes will be shipped to the third parties or Microsoft products.
Required Qualifications:
1.Good programming skills, having good project experience;
2.Good experience with GPGPU coding;
3.Good communication skills and excellent teamwork.
4.Can commit at least 4 months internship, can get your advisor’s approval.

Group: Innovation Engineering Group (IEG)

Group Overview
The Innovation Engineering Group is a new incubation group based in Microsoft Research Asia. Here teams are small, the environment is unstructured, and the work is fast-paced. One of our projects is an online marketplace that will be hosted in and targeted for the U.S. The project will be publicly available, and leverages technologies such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007, ASP.NET, and C#.
Roles & Responsibilities
Job Description: Focus crawler for academic search. The academic search is a vertical search engine for academic content (
http://academic.research.microsoft.com). A focus crawler is built to collect and analyze academic information from the Web.
Required Qualifications:
1.Major in Computer Science or related
2.Proficiency in C++ is required
3.Experience of windows application development will be preferred.
4.Full-time internship (with your supervisor's approval)
