Task
You are to conduct research into a mathematical model that has parameters, constraints and variables that represent real world information, that give rise to a scenario in finance, decision analysis or risk analysis. The aim is to
1) Investigate and model a research question in-depth, and to come up with interesting and detailed hypothesis questions to solve in a VBA simulator (30%)
2) Automate the visualisation of how such hypothetical questions could be answered, by building a user-friendly simulator in VBA with Excel. (70% awarded as the following marks below)
The marks for this simulator are to provide the following features at a minimum:
i. Use of appropriate front end windowing, by use of VBA UserForms with graphical user interface components to suit the research question. The more interactive and user-informative you make it, the higher the marks will be awarded so choose a model you can explore well with scenario questions. (15%)
ii. Use of VBA modules and variables clearly identified to separate the functionality of the research model that you have chosen to explore (as functions and subroutines). (15%)
iii. If a user enters data wrongly, consider the validation of the data before processing it, e.g.with message boxes for errors. (10%)
iv. Be able to import a series of data sets to work with that are based either on real-world data, or as close as possible. This can be either internet connected data as demonstrated or an approximation of some real-world data fictionally created. (10%)
v. To apply the functions that you create, and illustrate with your hypothesis several iterations of output. For example, a forecast of data from a six-monthly date range may have several months of data output in between. (10%)
vi. The output results of the simulations, will record calculated data to file, generate graphs dynamically, and generate a summary report formatted for a reader (either PivotTable based or Word document generated). (10%)
Deliverables
The final deliverables are as follows:
1. An easy to read instruction guide (word document) to the features of your simulator, with screenshots to show the user how to answer different model testing questions with it.
2. The Excel – Macro enabled documents
3. Sample data for input
4. Sample data that was generated as output
5. The UserForms and Module code files additionally exported (see the slides in lecture 4)
6. A brief research report (no more than 5 pages) as to why you chose that particular financial or risk model to test with.
