The 4-socket and 8-socket x86 server segment is growing more rapidly than the rest of the x86 server market. In 2010, x86 servers with 4 or 8 sockets were growing at a five-year CAGR of nearly 6% — twice the growth rate for the entire x86 server market. This growth is being driven by demand for larger systems for workload consolidation, by heavily virtualized computing environments that require more memory and I/O, and by the need for more scalable capacity for line-of-business (LOB) and mission-critical applications.
