PHIL/PA 323: Environmental Ethics
Course Description
Environmental problems have taken a prominent place in our public discourse in recent
decades. These problems challenge us because of the inherent complexity of natural, social, economic, and political systems. But some of our biggest obstacles in addressing
environmental problems come from the difficulty of identifying what would even count as solutions. Environmental problems force us to grapple with wide---ranging questions about the proper relationships between humans and their natural environments, as well as about our relationships with one another. This course will examine and analyze some of these thorny issues. We will begin by exploring the historical emergence of environmental concern in Western civilization. Our second unit will investigate a variety of connections between environmental outcomes, political institutions, and the incentives faced by individuals. Finally, our third unit will consider a series of “hard cases” in which conceptual ambiguities and competing considerations about what would count as “solving” environmental problems at all.

Architectural History and Society
course description
The purpose of this course is to lay the foundation for architectural literacy and develop an understanding of architecture’s role in society through ancient times to present day. This is accomplished through studying the major components that effect architecture: region, culture, and technology.
The basis of this knowledge is found in understanding the relationship between a society and the forms it creates, as the built environment has, 'a permanent and profound impact on personal health, productivity and happiness, and on community life.' The course follows these factors through the history of western civilization, from ancient Greece to contemporary Europe and America. Greater emphasis is given to the contemporary period because radical changes in technology and resources make this information more pertinent to the present.
