The subject of your second paper, due by 9pm Pacific time on Thursday, 26 May, is an analysis of the expansion and influence of the Western Roman Empire.  Using at least one acceptable outside source (see below), analyze an aspect of Roman influence in politics, law, religion, or culture.  Your topic can be on any geographical area that was under Roman control or influence, and must be within the period from 200 BCE to 476 CE.  If you prefer to write about the Byzantine Empire, you must check with me ahead of time.  The paper structure should be the following:

A brief (2-3 pages, approximately 600 to 900 words) summary of the area of influence (politics, law, religion, or culture) that you are analyzing and its relevance for the period;
An analysis (5-8 pages, approximately 1500-2400 words) of the significance of this influence, both in the Roman period and beyond.  Questions that you might answer include the following:
How was it implemented?  Did it inspire other states?  How so?
How did it serve as a model?
How did it influence society?
What role did it play in the time period being discussed?
Was it still relevant after the fall of Rome?  Is it still relevant today?
Potential topics could include:

The rise and spread of Christianity
Roman impact and influence in Britain
Augustus’ laws and morality policies
Roman popular culture (such as gladiators)
Roman culture outside of Rome (ie, Pompeii)
The creation of the tetrarchy under Diocletian
For the purposes of this paper, your subject within politics, law, religion, or culture must have been created between 200 BCE and 476 CE.   Papers which do not meet this criteria will receive a 0/100 = F grade.  If you are not certain if your choice meets the requirements, please check with me prior to beginning your paper.
