书名:The Princess Bride : S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure
作者:William Goldman

Upgrade
作者:Blake Crouch
Another sci-fi bestseller by Blake. Action intensive as always, science info dump (albeit coupling with the theme a bit too loosely) as usual, but he switches his focus from time manipulations to gene editing this time. As a dramatization of moral debates over gene editing, the story flows titillatingly enough. The catch in the pro-side sounds a bit artificial and cheap, though. An extra star for the subliming twist in the epilogue.

书名:The Last Lecture
作者:Randy Pausch
"The Last Lecture" made its way into my TBR through my reading group rec a while ago, but I had not picked it up until last week, when a reverent relative of mine passed away and I decided that reading this book could be a part of the remembrance.
My choice pays off well in multiple ways. Both Prof. Pausch and my passed relative were of the academic type; his VR and computer expertise, although only sparsely mentioned, intrigues me a lot, also providing a glimpse of VR technology in its incipient age; his wisdoms toward his students and his children are very enlightening in my relationship with my kid.
Prof. Pausch is a fun person, a distinguished scientist, a responsible husband and father, a vocal lecturer, as well as a competent writer. This book adds a plethora of thoughts and anecdotes besides his actual lecture, making the points richer. Unfortunately, given his condition, not every section is written in an optimal way, which is totally understandable. Some book reviews point out that this book is better read piecemeal rather than in one sitting, which I tend to concur and happened to have actually done so (I was reading a tome which is inconvenient to carry with me, so I read this e-book when I was out).

书名:The Book Eaters
Sunyi Dean
“The Book Eaters” is the debut fantasy novel by Sunyi, an accomplished SF&F short story writer in UK.
According to the extended preview prior to the release, the premise is intriguing with a hint of dark humor, not unlike the urban fantasy by Neil Gaiman. The heroine, Devon, is a fugitive from a rare species who feeds on books rather than regular food (thus the name). Nowadays only six manors remain of this Book Eater species in UK, all located in desolate areas. Devon opts to live secretly in an urban area, because her son is born with a rare illness rendering him unable to eat books but having to feast on human minds. Devon lures victims for his son while looking desperately for the antidote, a now-lost medicine called Redemption.
The fantasy unfolds in two storylines, alternating between the present time and a series of flashbacks of Devon’s early years. This structure is not exactly unheard of, but it requires a masterful handling to avoid either being overly obscure or the present time spoiling too much to the flashbacks. And Sunyi delivers the story just that professionally, the occasional present time revelations actually adding suspense into the flashbacks rather than spoiling the latter.
This mixture of urban fantasy, fairy tale and noir features princesses, knights, dragons and manors in a contemporary UK intricately.
