Do not slight this fantasy work because it’s Mr. Sanderson’s debut novel – it’s this very debut of his that impressed the widow of Robert Jordan so much so that she assigned none other than him to finish the last three installments of Jordan’s epic saga “The Wheel of Time” after the master’s untimely decease.
After reading the translated version last year, I always wanted to re-read the original and finally chose the most deluxe way to do so – the leatherbound 10th anniversary edition. I enjoyed every bit of it.
Sanderson exhibited every strength of his in this epic fantasy almost to his maximum, IMO even better than most of his later works, except perhaps only The Stormlight Archive saga.
His grand world-building and delicate magic system composition presented us with an enticing world driven by Aons, enabling Elantrians to perform magics with a bare wave of hands, also deriving sentient entities called Seons which serve people in wonderful ways. This magic system, along with its mysterious corruption (which serves as one of the major cliffhangers throughout the book with a most satisfactory closure beyond your widest anticipation), provide a perfect stage for imperial and religious plots to evolve and unravel intricately.
Sanderson’s branding plot twists, hailed by his fans as “Sanderlanche”, almost attained their pinnacle in this debut. Each of the three POV’s has their own unexpected yet well-foreshadowed developments, woven together to achieve enjoyable climaxes.
