Gzhel is a Russian folk handicraft of both painting and ceramic production. The earliest mention of Gzhel occurs in 1328. The widespread production of various varieties of Gzhel tableware began in the 17th century. In the 19th century, local artisans discovered a special recipe for making white faience, which stimulated the subsequent production of high-quality porcelain.
