at
Argonne National Laboratory as well as the Arthur Holly Compton Professor o
f Computer Science at the University of Chicago.
Foster is perhaps best known for his work as the originator, along with
Carl
Kesselman and Steve Tuecke, of the Globus Toolkit. This open source softwar
e provides a unifying framework for wide-area distributed computing; it cons
ists of a number of components, including ones for security, resource manage
ment, communication, and data management. Foster and Kesselman first introdu
ced many of the concepts that underlie the Grid in their book The Grid, firs
t published in 1999. Since then, the Globus Toolkit has been in the vanguard
of Grid software infrastructure implementations, which has made it a key co
mponent in the realization of the Grid.
