Editor's note
In July 2012, the 56th European Go Congress was held in Bonn,
Germany. My wife and I were the only participants who came from mainland
China. One year later, Mr. Lu Bin, vice president of Tsinghua Weiqi
Foundation, major investor of CEGO (China-Europe Go Organization), which I’m
a chief creator of both I, signed a 10-year sponsoring plan with EGF
(European Go Federation), raising over 1.5 million Euros for the construction
of European Go professional system. The plan is aimed at training top grade
Go players in Europe, promoting Go-related cultural exchanges between China
and Europe, and developing Go-related market to help EGF enter a
self-sustainable mode. One of our prominent supporters was GE Yuhong's Weiqi
Academy. Since 2013, more than 40 European and American students have
graduated from GE Academy, among which, 6 have obtained their professional
statuses and more than 10 have won medals in European Youth Championship.
Since 2017, Mr. Shen Zhengning, vice president of Tsinghua Weiqi Foundation,
has been sponsoring European Pros to participate in the Chinese C-League, the
first time European players ever stepped on the world's highest level Weiqi
competition stage. The 62ndEuropean Go Congress in 2018 greeted nearly 100
Chinese players in Pisa, the total number of which was second only to the
host nation. During the event, Martin Stiassny, the president of EGF,
presented a special trophy to Professor Han Lixin, Chairman of Tsinghua Weiqi
Foundation, to thank CEGO and Tsinghua Weiqi Foundation for their long-term
support.
Years of participation in the activities above made me see how
desperate the need is for foreign players to have a Chinese-English
dictionary of Weiqi terms, especially with the rapid development of
international Weiqi exchanges. In March, 2013, I posted a message on the BBS
of Shuimu Community to solicit volunteers. The work done at that time can be
regarded as the rudiment of the book. On May 2, 2015, the launching ceremony
of Chinese-English Dictionary of Weiqi terms project was held in Tsinghua
University. LIN Jianchao, the present Chairman of the Chinese Weiqi
Association attended the forum and gave a speech. In the following years,
Tsinghua Weiqi Foundation, in cooperation with Beijing Qizhi Technology Co.,
Ltd., organized a team of professional players, translators and bilingual
Weiqi amateurs, systematically sorted out the Chinese Weiqi terms and
completed the English translation work. The whole project has proceeded under
the supervision of Chinese Go Association, supported by Quzhou Lanke Weiqi
Institute. By this book, we hope to contribute to the popularization of Weiqi
culture.
The editors and translators of the dictionary all worked part-time
and in many cases, overtime, to make the book possible. I cannot thank them
enough for their delicateness to the work and fearlessness in taking on
difficulties. Among them I’d like to mention in particular ZHANG Yunxuan, a
Master of Arts in Translation from Beijing Language and Culture University,
and LI Zhe, a professional player, national champion and graduate from Peking
University, have made the most of contribution. WANG Junqi, a professional
player, and teacher in Beijing Sport University, who often has to battle late
into the night after a full day’s work, Professional players CUI Can and YIN
Hang, amateur Weiqi players whose native language is English, Viktor of
Austria and Lionel of the United States, all of whom have made irreplaceable
contributions to this book. I also would like to pay my tribute to the two
main reference works from which this book has drawn its inspiration: "Weiqi
Dictionary" by Mr. Zhao Zhiyun of China and Contemporary GO terms:
definitions and translations by Ms. Nam Chihyeong of South Korea.
Based on the principle of conciseness and practicality, this book
tries to meet the needs of different levels of Weiqi palyers. By way of
reclassifying, redefining and reinterpreting, we are trying to bring a new
level of clarification and consistency into Weiqi terms. All we hope is for
this dictionary to become something really handy for Weiqi players home and
abroad.
During the lengthy process of revision, we sometimes find it hard to
hold the balance between conciseness, preciseness and comprehensiveness all
at the same time. Regrets are as inevitably left as errors and omissions are.
For the time being, we have to satisfy ourselves with the notion that at
least the book will keep an open stance for suggestions and criticisms from
people around the world who love Weiqi to make it a better one in future.
