http://asia.nikkei.com/Politics-Economy/Policy-Politics/Japan-will-offer-2-million-yen-subsidy-for-fuel-cell-vehiclesTOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe revealed plans Friday to provide at
least 2 million yen ($19,558) in subsidies for every purchase of a fuel cell vehicle.
The Abe government considers the spread of these environmentally friendly
cars to be one of its growth strategies. They are more expensive than conventional
automobiles -- Toyota's model will cost about 7 million yen -- which led Abe to
decide government support was necessary to encourage buyers.
He also plans to set up over 100 hydrogen stations in the country, so that
owners can refuel the cars easily.
In a tour of the southwestern city of Kitakyushu, Abe visited a hydrogen station
operating on a trial basis and took one of the cars for a test drive himself.
