Raz:

全段最有技术含量的部分大概是使用了“it was not until”。
It was not until 1848 that the notion of a “cross-isthmus” canal secured itself in the public imagination. That was the year gold was discovered in a streambed at Sutter’s Mill in California, sparking a great westward migration of hopeful fortune seekers from the East. When the gold rush began, the country was still young, with no transcontinental railroad or stagecoach route connecting the East and West Coasts.

Lexile Range 810L - 1000L。
This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. Recently, there has again been great interest in the idea of a Channel Tunnel. If it is built, it will connect Britain to Europe for the first time in history.

Lexile range 1210L - 1400L。
Nearly ten years had passed since the Dursleys had woken up to find their nephew on the front step, but Privet Drive had hardly changed at all. The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursleys’ front door; it crept into their living room, which was almost exactly the same as it had been on the night when Mr. Dursley had seen that fateful news report about the owls.

Lexile Range 1410L - 1600L
To begin with, for you to be here now trillions of drifting atoms had somehow to assemble in an intricate and intriguingly obliging manner to create you. It’s an arrangement so specialized and particular that it has never been tried before and will only exist this once. For the next many years (we hope) these tiny particles will uncomplainingly engage in all the billions of deft, cooperative efforts necessary to keep you intact and let you experience the supremely agreeable but generally underappreciated state known as existence.
