https://www.techinsights.com/blog/techinsights-finds-smic-7nm-n2-huawei-mate-60-proTechInsights, the authoritative information platform of the semiconductor industry, analyzed the new Huawei Mate 60 Pro smartphone in the last 24 hours. The Mate 60 Pro was expected to include a 5G application processor and SoC (system-on-chip) from HiSilicon, the Kirin 9000s (Hi36A0).
The team found evidence of SMIC 7nm (N+2) which represents a made-in-China design and manufacturing milestone for the most advanced Chinese foundry TechInsights has documented. Some of the highlights include:
* The Kirin 9000s die measured 107 mm2, which is 2% larger than the Kirin 9000 (105 mm2). From various identifying features on the die, the team concluded the processor is manufactured by SMIC.
* Initial lab results indicated that this die is more advanced than SMIC's 14nm process node but presents larger critical dimensions (CDs) than what TechInsights has observed for 5nm process.
* Additional measurements of critical dimensions (CDs) on the die, including logic gate pitch, fin pitch and lower back-end-of-line (BEOL) metallization pitches, the analyst team concluded the die has 7nm features.

TechInsights has received the Huawei Mate 60 Pro in its Ottawa, Canada laboratory. Work has begun to determine if the application processor is indeed SMIC's latest generation process node - advancing it from its N+1 7nm node found by TechInsights in July 2022 in the MinerVA7 Bitcoin Miner.
If SMIC's N+2 7nm (with SRAM cache integrated) and 5G RF front end chipsets are revealed, it signals a big milestone and breakthrough for the Chinese semiconductor industry - and a disruptive move on the global stage.
The original SMIC N+1 7nm technology analyzed by TechInsights in 2022 was used in the MinerVA7 Bitcoin Miner ASIC application made the chipset less sensitive to possible production process variations due to smaller production quantities. For this next generation of the SMIC 7nm process is the ability to manufacture at scale in a process that was previously having yield issues. From a semiconductor process technology perspective, this is the first commercial use of an advanced Chinese process technology node that support bitcells (embedded SRAM), opening the door to a fully domestic advanced SoC design and manufacturing ecosystem.

As of our latest analysis, the Mate 60 Pro exclusively features SK hynix memory components. Let's break down the key findings:
H583TD64M DRAM Die: This component, showcased in Figure 1 (package) and Figure 3, a die marking exclusive to the TechInsights Platform, boasts the SK hynix D1z process. It's a testament to SK hynix's cutting-edge memory technology, as previously documented in our analyses.
H25FTC0 NAND Die: The Mate 60 Pro's NAND memory, seen in Figure 2 (package) and Figure 4, a die marking exclusive to the TechInsights Platform, relies on SK hynix's 176-Layer TLC 4D NAND process. This represents a significant leap in storage capacity and performance.
